Reading and spelling foundations.

Choose it for a specific reading task.

Selected cards may be useful if you are working on English letter–sound relationships and blending simple written words. For example, you may know a spoken word but need practice connecting its sounds to the letters you see. A tutor or learning partner can introduce the patterns and help you choose suitable cards.

If you already read English comfortably and mainly want conversation, vocabulary, accent work or advanced spelling, this early-reading inventory is unlikely to be your best starting point. It is not a complete pronunciation course: sentence stress, intonation and connected speech are outside its scope.

There are no translations or vocabulary lessons. You need to understand a word’s meaning as well as practise reading it. Learners beginning literacy for the first time may need substantial teaching support beyond these cards.

Decoding and spelling are also adult learning tasks.

The U.S. Department of Education’s LINCS collection includes Making Sense of Decoding and Spelling, a researched adult reading course that begins with alphabetic decoding and develops spelling patterns and reading fluency. This establishes an adult teaching context for these skills; its results concern that course, not our deck.

LINCS’ Teaching Adults to Read also emphasises adult-oriented materials and instruction matched to the learner’s needs. Our cards were designed for children, so the presentation and limited coverage are part of your suitability decision.

A suggested routine with a tutor.

1. Identify the skill to practise. Read a few sample words together. Decide whether the difficulty is understanding the word, connecting letters to sounds, blending or spelling. Select practice accordingly.
2. Introduce one relevant pattern. Listen to its recording and have your tutor model how it works in familiar words. You do not have to start at the first set if those patterns are already secure.
3. Attempt before revealing. Read the printed word aloud, or hear a spelling prompt and write the word. Compare your answer with the back. Independent sounding-out counts as a correct reading answer.
4. Keep reviews manageable. Suspend untaught cards, keep reading and spelling siblings apart, and add new material at a comfortable pace. The setup guide explains the Anki controls; its suggested settings were written for parent-led use and are not an adult learning prescription.
5. Apply it to useful text. Work with your tutor on reading material that matters to you and fits the patterns you have learned. Single-word cards are only one part of that work.

You get 48 sound cards, 282 words with reading and spelling cards, 18 tricky-word reading cards and 344 human recordings. The sequence draws on Letters and Sounds (2007), Phases 2–3, with ure omitted and 30 tagged extension words. It does not cover all English sounds or spelling patterns.

The voice is Simon’s broadly non-rhotic accent from England. The package includes child-focused sound pictures, three word pictures and a parent guide; it appears in Anki as Sound Road. The purchase page and receipt say English Phonics for Adults; the internal Anki name and card content remain unchanged.
