MSA, dialect, or both
Modern Standard Arabic is the language of news, formal writing and pan-Arab media. No one speaks it natively in conversation. If your goal is travel, you also need a dialect: Egyptian (the most widely understood), Levantine (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine), Gulf, or Maghrebi. Script direction and harakat
Arabic is read right-to-left and uses the Arabic abjad (consonants plus optional vowel marks, the harakat). Two things to know:
- Some beginner decks include harakat to make pronunciation unambiguous. Native materials usually don't. Our decks use the standard unvocalized script, the same way real-world Arabic is written, and rely on the native audio on every card for pronunciation. That's a deliberate trade: you learn to read Arabic as it actually appears, and the audio removes the ambiguity.
- The same root letters can produce a dozen related words via the templatic morphology (root k-t-b: kitāb book, kātib writer, maktab office, maktaba library). Frequency lists naturally include the high-traffic derivations, but a root-based deck is a useful complement once you're past the first 500 words.
